When a suspicious death happens in Wisconsin, it's usually a local police or sheriff's agency answering the call to investigate. When leads turn cold or cases go unsolved, that information ends up in filing cabinets scattered across the state. What follows is a statewide list of 384 unsolved murders, a vast majority, 257, are from Milwaukee. The others represent 31 other Wisconsin counties.

How we did it: Gannett Wisconsin Media reporters spent months gathering notable cases from 1926-2012 from media, court and police reports. A more recent directory of unsolved homicides is available partially from the state's Office of Justice Assistance. Those listings were then verified with each individual department to cull out solved cases.
